The other day I was driving home from a meeting and the Dave Ramsey Show was playing on the radio.
Most people who call in ask Dave for advice on how to get out of the financial mess they are in. Listening to the show you hear endless ways people can pile up debt to the point where they are completely owned by it.
Debt negatively affects every aspect of our lives and dictates how we live and the choices we make.
But better than the “help, I am a slave to debt” stories are the ones of people who have paid off ridiculous amounts of debt and are now living free of it’s crushing weight. When people call in with one of these stories Dave gives them the opportunity to count down from three and then yell at the top of their lungs “I’m Debt FREE”.
Now, you can call me sappy but I get choke up almost every time I hear someone shout those words. Something deep inside of me wells up in response to the heart felt cry of freedom and I am reminded once again of the massive spiritual debt that was wiped out by Jesus. He paid my debt and set me free and those cries of “debt FREE” echo a cry in me that goes way beyond money.
There is a hymn that says it well…
Jesus paid it all,
All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
Thanks to Jesus, being “debt FREE” is truly something worth shouting about.
